Students allegedly forced to pay ₹5,000 monthly for ACs in Ahmedabad government hostel

Students at Ahmedabad’s NHL Medical College hostels are allegedly being forced to pay unofficial monthly charges in government-run hostels.
Despite rules banning ACs and coolers in hostel rooms, rectors are allegedly allowing students to use them in exchange for ₹5,000 per month per student. Charges are also reportedly being collected for refrigerators and induction stoves, with the money allegedly going directly into the pockets of hostel authorities instead of government accounts.
The alleged racket goes beyond electrical appliances. Although hostel rules mandate room-sharing, students wanting single occupancy are reportedly charged an additional ₹8,000 to ₹10,000 every month. Even former students are allegedly being allowed to continue staying in hostels after paying similar amounts unofficially.
The controversy has also raised serious questions over administrative complicity. Hostel management committees include senior doctors and department heads, yet the alleged system reportedly continued unchecked for months.
The report further claims alcohol is easily accessible inside the hostels despite Gujarat being a dry state. In January 2026, liquor bottles were allegedly found inside a girls’ hostel room.
A written complaint submitted by security personnel on April 8 reportedly warned authorities about illegal items being brought into the hostels. Security staff allegedly claimed they were verbally instructed by hostel officials to allow such items inside.
In another questionable move, the college administration reportedly issued a public notice announcing surprise checks in hostels for prohibited items including cigarettes, tobacco, refrigerators and heavy appliances effectively warning students before inspections.
