Alcohol and non-veg food, which are banned at the Gujarat Vidyapith hostel premises, became the reason a doctoral student was expelled from the University campus on Ashram road on the night of Aug 7.
A student pursuing PhD in history was found consuming liquor and non-vegetarian food with his friends at Pran Jeevan Chhatralay (hostel) in Gujarat Vidyapith.

The in-charge vice-chancellor (VC) said that three people were caught consuming non-vegetarian food and alcohol by the hostel management branch, including the doctoral student and his two friends who did not belong to the university.
The three of them reportedly fled the room under some pretext and did not return till the night of Aug 8.
The VC also said that the university expelled the PhD student and informed his parents about his act. As per sources, he had been studying at the university for 3-4 years and was in his final year. While, his friends who were with him when the incident occurred, had come to Ahmedabad to appear for the TAT exams. It is to notable that last year, the old security guard was replaced by a security agency.
The university has not filed a police complaint against the student yet but has ordered an investigation regarding the two outsiders breaking into the hostel premises.
Coincidently, this occurred on Aug 7 which was also the day when cannabis plants were seized on Ahmedabad’s Gujarat University campus.
This, however, is not the first time that the university administration has encountered incidents of alcohol consumption on its hostel campus.
The more than century old Gujarat Vidyapith, founded by Mahatma Gandhi, does not permit non-vegetarian food on its campus, including the hostel premises, while the consumption of alcohol is prohibited in Gujarat.
