A high-speed electric BMW car rammed into an auto-rickshaw before crashing into a public bus stand near Bhakti Circle in Nikol, Ahmedabad on Monday afternoon, leaving the rickshaw driver seriously injured and causing extensive damage to public property, police said.

According to senior police officials from the Ahmedabad Traffic Police, the incident occurred near an Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) bus stand, where the luxury vehicle allegedly lost control after hitting the rickshaw at high speed.

Police said the impact was so severe that the auto-rickshaw overturned and was flung several metres away. The BMW vehicle then veered off course and crashed into the bus stand structure, causing it to collapse completely.

The driver of the BMW allegedly fled the scene immediately after the accident, abandoning the vehicle. Officials later confirmed that the car has Maharashtra registration.

S I Sumra, Police Inspector of the I Division Traffic Police Station, said that teams have been formed to trace the accused driver.

“One team has been dispatched to the hospital to record the statement of the injured, while another is working to identify and locate the driver. The vehicle’s registration details indicate that it is from Maharashtra,” Sumra said.

The injured rickshaw driver sustained severe head and body injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. His condition is stated to be serious, police said.

Officials said a case of hit-and-run is likely to be registered once the victim’s statement is recorded. CCTV footage from the area is also being examined to establish the sequence of events and confirm the speed of the vehicle at the time of the crash.
