Smart parking at Sindhu Bhavan road in AMC’s drive to ease city’s traffic menace

Updated: Feb 27th, 2024

As the parking menace takes over the city’s Sindhu Bhavan road, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has come up with the notion to install a smart parking system at the happening stretch. However, as parking on the roadside is already a cause of major traffic problems, speculations are being made about whether this system would act as a boon or a bane.

This system has been set up on an experimental basis by the AMC near Gotila Garden on the Sindhu Bhavan stretch. Five such smart parking booths have been installed, which can be utilised through a QR code facility.

Stationing the car in the specifically marked position on the parking booth deploys a jack, which affixes the car’s position.

After which, car details could be entered, and the parking charge could be paid by scanning the QR code attached to the booth.

As several complaints of mismanagement and corruption arise against parking contractors in the city’s various parking spots, this system could be utilised to negate human intervention in the process. And a parking facility could be set up with ease.

However, as parking on active roads has proven to be a headache for commuters for a long time, this system could add to their plight. AMC is accused of overlooking its administrative priorities and seeking monetary benefits through this system.

AMC’s ‘drive’ for traffic discipline

To maintain traffic discipline in the city, a yellow box junction initiative was started at Ambawadi’s Panjrapol Circle. This system is intended to ease the flow of traffic through the busy junction. After achieving success with this, the system was then installed near Prahladnagar Garden as well.

This system is to be set up at other junctions in the city, including Khodiyarnagar, Dharnidhar, Keshavbaug, Kutchi Bhavan, Govindwadi, CTM junction, and Memco.
