Smart city or pothole city? 13 areas of Ahmedabad riddled with potholes, repairs after monsoon

With just 15 inches of rain this season, Smart City Ahmedabad has become a pothole-city, reflecting the civic authorities’ poor preparedness for the monsoon.
Roads in 13 areas of the city are riddled with potholes, but an official count is awaited.
Waterlogging and bad roads have returned to haunt Amdavadis. On June 25, heavy waterlogging in East Ahmedabad forced residents to abandon their vehicles and walk nearly 4 km in knee-deep water to reach home.
Alongside, potholes are posing significant risks to two-wheeler riders, who are prone to accidents on uneven roads.
Moreover, the riders suffer from neck and back pain due to constant jerking while driving on damaged roads.
In September 2024, the AMC spent ₹1.20 crore to repair 44 potholes across the city. From road construction to pothole repairs, municipal authority, contractors, and politicians collectively spend around ₹1,000 crore annually on building new roads, resurfacing existing roads, and repairing potholes.
Yet, with the first rain, the potholes resurface to trouble commuters.
