Six youths from Godhra and Panchmahal in Gujarat were killed after a trailer truck collided head-on with their van near Panchkawasa village on the Dhar-Ujjain-Petlawad four-lane highway in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday.

A trailer truck, bearing registration number GJ39TB9248 and loaded with iron goods, was travelling towards Ujjain on the Badnawar-Ujjain stretch when it allegedly came onto the wrong side of the road and crashed into the oncoming van.

The impact was so severe that the van was completely mangled.

Five of the six victims died at the spot, while another youth was rescued in a critically injured condition. He was rushed to Badnawar Civil Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries while being taken for treatment.

Victims identified

Dhar Additional Superintendent of Police Vijay Dabur identified some of the deceased as Nitesh Bhai, son of Prakash Bhai, from Godhra; Mayur Kumar Chouhan, son of Prakash Bhai, from Godhra; Vishal Kumar, son of Ramesh Bai Parmar, from Panchmahal; and Rakesh, son of Bhupat Bhai, from Godhra.

Two other victims are yet to be identified.

Trailer driver arrested

The trailer driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the collision. After receiving information about the accident, Badnawar Station House Officer Amit Singh Kushwaha, Tehsildar Suresh Nagar and SDM Priyanka Mimrod reached the spot with a police team.

Police subsequently tracked down and apprehended the driver.

Local residents and police personnel broke open the damaged van and worked to rescue the victims. The bodies were later shifted to the Civil Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

Police have informed the families of the identified victims in Gujarat and registered a case against the trailer driver.

The accident temporarily disrupted traffic on the four-lane highway. Police later removed the wreckage and restored traffic movement.
