Shooting in Surendranagar: Shots fired over complaint against illegal mining
The investigation into the mineral theft in Sudamda village of Sayla, Surendranagar district has taken a violent turn.
On the night of September 14, 10 rounds were fired outside the house of Kumkum Yadav, daughter of history-sheeter Sotaj Yadav. She had filed a complaint against the excessive illegal mining in the area on the same day.
In an earlier complaint on September 13, Kumkum had demanded a thorough investigation into these illegal stone quarries and immediate action to halt the mining activities. She had also requested the district collector and other relevant authorities to measure the stock of stones at the quarries.
She also threatened to stage a protest outside the collector’s office on September 25 if the demands weren’t met.
In another complaint, Yadav mentioned receiving threats to withdraw her previous complaint.
Later that night, around 10 pm, individuals in three separate cars fired indiscriminately outside her house.
The shooting damaged her house doors, windows, car, and other areas. The attackers also used derogatory language against the complainant's family based on their caste.
After the incident, the Surendranagar superintendent of police, Limbdi deputy superintendent of police, police sub-inspector, local crime branch, and special operations group along with the police force reached the scene.
The police found empty cartridges at the site, which were seized and sent for investigation. The police registered a case over the matter and initiated proceedings.
Notably, the complainant’s father, Sotaj Yadav, has a history of involvement in mineral theft, extortion, explosives, land grabbing, and mineral theft. He was previously fined over ₹200 crore for these offences.
Recently, he was released on bail after a short imprisonment. A few days ago, Sotaj Yadav was targeted in a shooting incident near the Sayla bypass.
