Shift towards English medium leads to closure of Gujarati classes from 9 to 12 in Ahmedabad schools

The growing preference for English-medium education has led to the closure of several Gujarati-medium classes in Ahmedabad’s granted schools.
According to the Ahmedabad District Education Officer (DEO), a total of 35 classes across 29 granted secondary and higher secondary schools (Standards 9 to 12) have been shut down in the current academic year. The decision followed hearings held in two phases, where it was found that student enrolment in these classes did not meet the required norms.
The closures included 13 classes of Class 9, seven of Class 10, ten of Class11, and five of Class12. While most affected institutions are Gujarati-medium schools, a few Hindi-medium schools have also been impacted.
Officials noted that the increasing number of English-medium schools opening each year has drawn students away from Gujarati-medium education, resulting in dwindling enrolment and the eventual closure of classes in granted schools.
