Ahmedabad is witnessing a worrying rise in high-speed accidents. A recent study shows that overspeeding is the leading cause of road accidents in the city, with at least 20 people hospitalised every day due to injuries sustained on the roads.

The Sarkhej-Gandhinagar (SG) Highway, particularly the stretch from Sanathal to Vaishnodevi Circle has emerged as one of the most dangerous accident-prone zones, recording around 10 accidents daily. Despite CCTV surveillance and repeated awareness campaigns, reckless b  driving and violation of speed limits remain rampant.

To manage the increasing traffic and accident load, the Ahmedabad Police have had to set up two separate traffic police stations for the highway, SG-1 and SG-2.

Not just SG Highway—areas along the Outer Ring Road and developing outskirts such as Ramol, Odhav, Khokhra, Nikol, Narol, Sarkhej, and Vasna are also reporting high fatality numbers.

This year so far:

I-I Division (Amraiwadi–Odhav zone): 67 deaths, 97 serious injuries

K Division (Danilimda–Narol zone): 39 deaths, 50 serious injuries

M Division (Vasna–Sarkhej–Ellisbridge zone): 30 deaths, 55 serious injuries

L Division (Sabarmati–Ranip–Riverfront zone): 30 deaths, 60 serious injuries

While the total number of road accidents in Ahmedabad has shown a 8–10% reduction in recent years, the rate of fatal accidents has increased by 5–6%, raising serious concerns.

Old city remains relatively safer

Interestingly, the congested and narrow-road areas of the Old City (Kot area)—including Kalupur, Shahpur, and Karanj—report significantly fewer accidents, indicating that wider roads tend to encourage speeding and, consequently, more accidents.

33 deaths recorded on SG Highway this year

Between January and October 2025, SG Highway alone has witnessed:

33 fatalities

41 serious injuries

Traffic Police call for self-discipline

Joint Commissioner of Traffic Police N N Chaudhary emphasised that while road engineering upgrades and increased policing are underway, self-discipline among drivers remains the key.

“Driving fast during peak hours or late at night may seem harmless, but even a moment of negligence can turn into a life-changing tragedy,” he said.
