A major accident was averted on Wednesday night after several dilapidated shops located on the Kalupur railway overbridge in Ahmedabad collapsed, prompting an immediate response from the fire brigade and local police.

According to officials from the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services, around seven to eight old, severely damaged structures came crashing down. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.

Upon receiving a distress call, two fire tenders were rushed to the spot to assist in rescue and clearance operations. Fire officials said the debris was being cleared to ensure that no one was trapped underneath.

Local police also reached the site soon after the collapse and cordoned off the affected stretch of the overbridge to prevent further risk to commuters.

Officials said the structures had long been in a dangerous and deteriorated condition, raising questions about safety inspections and enforcement around one of the city’s busiest traffic zones.

Authorities are likely to conduct a structural assessment of the remaining shops on the overbridge to prevent similar incidents in the future.
