At least seven people were killed early on Monday after a speeding truck rammed into a group of pedestrians on the Lakhtar–Viramgam highway in the Surendranagar district.

The victims were members of the Mundhwa family from the Bharwad community and were on their way to a temple in Gadhka village in Rajkot district when the accident occurred near Bhaskarpara in Lakhtar.

According to officials, the truck, reportedly travelling at high speed, ploughed into the group, killing seven persons, five women and two men, on the spot.

Eyewitnesses said around 10 pedestrians were hit in the incident, which left bodies scattered across the road.

Police and emergency services, including the 108 ambulance team, rushed to the scene soon after receiving information. The bodies were later shifted for post-mortem examination.

A case has been registered against the truck driver, and further investigation is under way, police added.
