Vehicle thefts have been a headache for the state police to tackle across Gujarat for a long time. But in a bizarre video game-like turn of events, a thief stole a police jeep right under their nose in Dwarka on Dec 28.

An unidentified person fled with the jeep, parked at Dwarka police station’s compound in broad daylight.

According to the information received, the jeep, numbered GJ-18-GB-7269, reported to be a Mahindra Bolero, equipped with police customisations, including the beacon light.

Discovering such a case, district superintendent of police (SP), Nitish Pandey, who termed this an “audacious act,” swung immediately into action to bust the absconder.

Upon spreading a nexus of blockades across the district, the accused was reported to have been fleeing Dwarka and was intercepted after three hours, near Jamnagar, by a team of the district’s local crime branch (LCB), accompanied by the Dwarka district special operations group (SOG). Police seized the stolen vehicle and arrested a youth, reported to have been identified as Mohit Sharma.

Police found a selfie uploaded on his social media account with him posing alongside the stolen police jeep.

Further investigation also revealed the accused’s history dating back to several illicit associations, as per reports.

However, his reason for committing such an “audacious and daring” theft has yet to be uncovered.
