A 67-year-old retired diamond trader from Mumbai was allegedly robbed of cash and jewellery worth nearly ₹2 lakh by two unidentified men posing as auto-rickshaw drivers in the early hours of Friday, soon after he arrived at the Kalupur railway station.

According to the FIR lodged at the Kalupur police station, the complainant, Chandrakant Nathalal Shah, a resident of Malad (East), Mumbai, reached Ahmedabad around 4.30 am on the Gorakhpur–Ahmedabad Express (Train No. 19490).

Shah told the police that he had planned to visit the Vijaynagar Jain Derasar in Naranpura for a religious function and was waiting for an AMTS bus near the Moti Mahal Hotel, opposite Kalupur station, when two men approached him in an auto-rickshaw.

“The driver asked me where I wanted to go. When I told him Naranpura, he offered to drop me there for ₹30. I agreed and sat inside the rickshaw,” Shah said in his statement.

The rickshaw began moving towards Delhi Darwaza and Income Tax. Before reaching Gandhi Bridge, the driver and another passenger allegedly threatened him, demanding money and his gold ring. “The accused threatened to kill Shah if he didn’t comply. Out of fear, he handed over ₹7,000 in cash and a gold ring weighing half a tola, studded with diamonds,” Said the police

The two men then allegedly threw him out of the moving vehicle near Gandhi Bridge and fled with the valuables. The stolen items are valued at around ₹2.07lakh, police said.

After the incident, Shah took another rickshaw and went to the Vijaynagar Jain Derasar, where he narrated the incident to the temple priest. The priest immediately called the police control room. A police van reached the spot and escorted Shah back to Gandhi Bridge to inspect the location before advising him to register a complaint at the Kalupur police station.

A case has been registered against the unidentified duo for robbery and criminal intimidation, and an investigation has been initiated. Police said they are scanning CCTV footage from the Kalupur station, Delhi Darwaza, and Gandhi Bridge areas to trace the accused and the autorickshaw used in the offence.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that the suspects may have targeted the victim after spotting him alone outside the station in the early hours. We are verifying CCTV footage and trying to identify the rickshaw involved,” a police official said.
