Individual threatening to blow up Narendra Modi Stadium arrested by crime branch

A video blogger from Madhya Pradesh, Karan Mali, was arrested by the Rajkot crime branch today for sending email threats to blow up Narendra Modi Stadium on Oct 14.

As per the preliminary investigation of the crime branch, Mali threatened just for fun. It is suspected that he has also sent an email demanding ₹500 cr for the release of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. The accused is currently being interrogated further by the crime branch.


As Ahmedabad is all set to host its second ICC World Cup cricket match on Oct 14, this time a fierce India vs Pakistan clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium,. Owing to this, the security has been beefed up in various locations with more than 12,000 security and police personnel.

Teams of security

Teams of bomb disposal squads (BDS), drone teams, National Security Guards (NSG), commandos, and police personnel were ordered to be deployed for security.

After a threat mail that mentioned a threat to PM Narendra Modi and blowing up Narendra Modi Stadium, in a high-level review meeting held on Oct 9 regarding the security and safety arrangements, chief minister Bhupendra Patel and Gujarat police decided to amp up the security in the whole city.

Largest police security

The Ahmedabad police have planned the largest cricket match security fleet till now with a total of 14,000 security staff, including 7,000 police staff, 4,000 home guards, quick reaction teams (QRT), bomb disposal squad (BDS), crime branch, anti-terrorist squad (ATS), and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), along with a deputy commissioner of police, an assistant commissioner of police, and a police inspector of the Ahmedabad police department.

The police commissioner, GS Malik said, “Due to the presence of a large number of VVIP leaders in this match, arrangements will be made at the hotels, along with teams escorting them for any movements in the city.”

“As the cricket teams of India and Pakistan reach Ahmedabad, the crime branch will be assigned the responsibility of escorting the team to the hotel, where both teams will remain present during the practice sessions too. Moreover, three teams of NSG, two teams of Chetak Commando, five teams of QRT, 13 teams of BDS, and an additional staff of 2,000 personnel will be present."

Drones and CCTVs

Strong surveillance has been deployed with around 1,000 body worn cameras and 2,000 CCTV cameras in the city. A separate team of female staff will also be deployed at the stadium for frisking female audiences. 

“Since there will be more than one lakh spectators in the stadium, an evacuation strategy has been designed to ensure that they are evacuated safely in case of emergencies,” he added.

Keeping in mind the threat of any chemical attack, the central agency has deployed a team of state disaster response force (SDRF), both inside and outside the stadium.

Email threats to kill PM and blow up stadium

According to reports, the national investigation agency (NIA) informed the Gujarat police about a threat mail to blow up the prime minister Narendra Modi and the  Narendra Modi Stadium. The email also demanded the release of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who is currently in Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Jail, along with a ransom of ₹500 cr.

Following this, the state home department was instructed to hold an immediate meeting on Oct 7 with director general of police (DGP) Vikas Sahay and Ahmedabad police commissioner GS Malik to take the necessary steps. In this regard, additional commissioner sector 1, Chirag Kordia, said that police have been put on alert.

The Ahmedabad crime branch will be actively deputed around Narendra Modi Stadium from Oct 11 to keep a watch on the movements around the stadium.
