In a move to teach the children the principles of ‘Shrimad Bhagavad Gita,’ the state government is set to introduce the religious text into the academic curriculum for Classes 6 to 12.
Gujarat’s education minister, Praful Pansheriya, moved a resolution related to this in the state assembly on Feb 7.
Pansheriya remarked that the Gita is a sacred and ancient text of the Hindu religion, and despite that, it belongs to all of society, as several global personalities have taken inspiration from it, he added.
This addition to the curriculum shall be introduced in the form of recitations and renditions.
Chapters from Gita are to be introduced for Classes 9 to 12 in the textbooks of the first language.
He mentioned that parents wish for a cultured upbringing for their children, and understand the way of life. And the introduction of the Gita will provide them with this social upliftment.
Pansheriya drew a comparison to how even the United Nations recognised the benefits of practising yoga, which is a noteworthy aspect of Indian culture. Similarly, soon, the UN will also consider celebrating ‘Gita Day.’
Passed unanimously, but not without questions
The resolution to introduce Gita in schools was supported by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and was passed in the state assembly unanimously.
However, AAP MLA Umesh Makwana questioned the government over the unavailability of faculty to teach these courses.
He added that the government is inadequate in providing them sufficient salaries, so how will the students be provided with this education?
