School authorities responsible to check capacity of students sitting in school bus, vans
As summer vacation is about to end on May 13, the Directorate of Primary Schools and school authorities have instructed DEOs (District Education Officers) and DPOs (District Primary Education Officer) for ensuring the safety of children during transportation.
Under the Gujarat School Safety Programme 2016-17, the authorities will ensure safe transportation of students of government, granted, and private primary, secondary, and higher education.
The school authorities will have to make sure that the mode of transportation - van, school bus, or rickshaw - is carrying limited children in the vehicle.
Parents will also be informed to promptly notify traffic police or the RTO (Regional Transport Office) if they observe a school vehicle carrying more children than its capacity permits.
The DEOs and DPOs are instructed to ensure that all these instructions are implemented in schools.
However, the authorities have not decided the ideal capacity of the vehicles carrying students.
