Social Security Number scam

In a significant breakthrough in busting cyber frauds, Ahmedabad’s Vejalpur police have arrested an accused in an international scam involving fraud with US citizens based on their Social Security number.

Vejalpur police inspector (PI) RH Chauhan and his staff received a tip-off on Apr 4 that a person was running an illegal call centre in Fatema Residency in Fatehwadi, Vejalpur, and extorting money on a large scale from abroad.

Based on this, the police raided and nabbed a youth named Sohil Parvez Sheikh.

Sheikh admitted to operating under a person running an illegal call centre in Delhi. His tasks involved logging in to a website based on username and password and engaging in calls from US citizens based on their Social Security data to obtain all their private details through gift vouchers and other modus operandi.

This data was later used to extort money from the victims through gift vouchers and other scams.

Sheikh sent these details to Delhi, which was used by call centres based there and other states to run this racket.

The police recovered three mobile phones and a laptop from him and launched a further investigation in this regard.
