The neighbouring states Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are yet to pay over ₹7,000 cr to Gujarat as their share for the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Dam.

A question was raised in the Gujarat Assembly regarding the payable amount of neighbouring states in the Sardar Sarovar Dam project till Dec 31, 2023. To which, the government replied that no funds have been recovered from Madhya Pradesh, while Maharashtra paid ₹65.67 cr, and Rajasthan paid ₹27.31 cr.

The Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd has been writing to all three BJP-led states for the recovery of the amount.

Notably, in November 2021, the chief minister had also written to the union minister of law and justice Kiren Rijiju to intervene. Yet, the three states have not returned the amount after all these years.

The Sardar Sarovar Project covers four major stakeholders Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan. The irrigation benefits accrue to the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat while the hydroelectric power of the SSP are shared by all the states.
