Sabarmati Riverfront set for expansion till GIFT City

Gandhinagar residents will soon be able to take a stroll along the Sabarmati Riverfront. In a multiple-phase project, Ahmedabad’s riverfront will make its way to GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Technology City).
Phase IV of the proposed timeline for the stretch is slated to have a 9.3-kilometre of span between the PDPU bridge (now Pandit Deendayal Energy University) near GIFT City and Shahpur bridge along the lines of the riverfront in Ahmedabad. The initial phase of this 9.3 km stretch is estimated to cost ₹354 cr.
Currently, the Phase II of the project is under construction.
Sustainable riverfront?
Notably, the large areas along the ghats of the GIFT City riverfront will have natural topography instead of the concrete style of Ahmedabad’s riverfront.
The GIFT City riverfront is divided into seven phases, which will cover Rayasan, Randesan, and Dholeshwar Mahadev.
While the work on phase IV is about to start shortly, phases V, VI, and VII are about to start in the upcoming years.
Meanwhile, Ambedkar bridge in Dafnala, a part of phase I of the Sabarmati Riverfront expansion project, is already operational.
Phase II, which is in progress, will stretch from Dafnala to Indira bridge. The second phase of development includes residential, commerce, green parks, and road networks, which will be comparatively greener than other areas.
Phase III, which is about to embark after the Gujarat Global Vibrant Summit, will have a 4.5-kilometre stretch from Indira bridge to Narmada canal in Gandhinagar. The development of the third phase is a collaboration between a Dubai-based private company and the state government.
An MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) worth ₹1,000 crore was signed with the Gujarat government for the same in Sept 2023.
