Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPI) appears to have become a safe haven for smugglers as two passengers on Monday were caught with 8.4 kg of hydroponic weed, valued at more than ₹8 crore.
The flight had arrived in Ahmedabad from Hanoi, Vietnam. Customs officers grew suspicious of two passengers and conducted a thorough search. During the inspection, they found that the duo had concealed 8.4 kg of cannabis inside 16 sealed vacuum bags. The narcotics were seized, and both passengers were arrested.
Notably, the modus operandi of drug trafficking at Ahmedabad airport seems to have changed. Earlier, drugs were being brought in from Thailand, but now the supply is being routed through Vietnam. In the last three months alone, cannabis worth more than ₹250 crore has been seized at Ahmedabad airport.
Last month, the Customs Department recovered four kilograms of hydroponic marijuana, valued at over ₹4 crore in the international market, from the baggage of a passenger who had arrived from Bangkok on an Air Asia flight earlier this month.
