₹38 lakh collected in traffic violation fines daily in state

For the first time, Gujaratis have paid a fine of over ₹100 cr rupees in a year

With the surge in the number of vehicles in Gujarat, traffic issues, air and noise pollution, and traffic rule violations plague the city.

Gujarat residents incurred ₹138 cr in traffic fines last year for rule violations. So eventually, they paid ₹38 lakh in fines per day for violating traffic rules. 

For the first time, Gujaratis have paid a fine of over ₹100 cr rupees in a year.

As per the data generated through e-challan, in 2023, a total of 15.99 lakh memos were issued for traffic rules violations, and those violators paid ₹138.87 cr unanimously.

In just one month of January 2024, traffic fines collected in Gujarat were ₹10.59 cr. Therefore, an average amount of ₹39.53 lakh per day has been paid as a fine this year.

The e-memo mostly includes fines for not wearing helmets and breaking signals. In Gujarat, 6 out of 10 vehicle drivers are seen without a helmet or seat belt. Moreover, various scooters and car drivers are driving cars and scooters without a valid licence.

E-challans data revealed that last year, Uttar Pradesh paid the highest amount of fines, at ₹609 cr, followed by Maharashtra with ₹329 cr, Rajasthan with ₹308 cr, and Tamil Nadu with ₹299 cr.

However, this figure is only for e-challans. The amount of fines collected by the traffic police on the spot will be much higher.

The amount of fines for traffic rule violations decreased from ₹98.04 cr in 2021 to ₹92.53 crore in 2022 in Gujarat. However, there was a 51% increase in fines from 2022 to 2023.

Other states where fines increased from 2022 to 2023 include, Tamil Nadu saw a 99% increase, followed by West Bengal with 87%, Assam with 15%, and Uttar Pradesh with 14%.
