Ahead of the monsoon, a huge cave-in on one of the major roads in Makarba, Ahmedabad led to an auto-rickshaw driver nearly losing his life on Monday morning. The driver was fortunate to escape with injuries after his vehicle suddenly plunged into the crater when he was passing by the road. The auto driver sustained facial injuries in the sudden mishap, which unfolded in a matter of seconds.

According to eyewitnesses, the road unexpectedly gave way just as the auto was crossing the spot around 10.30am, causing the front of the vehicle to plunge into the sinkhole, opposite the Palm Meadows apartment on Makarba road. “It happened so quickly, the driver didn’t even realise what had occurred,” said one passer-by, who helped pull the injured man out of the ditch.

Locals immediately alerted emergency services, and the injured driver was rushed to a hospital by ambulance.

Following the incident, the traffic police officials cordoned off the area, deeming the road unsafe for use. The cave-in led to severe traffic congestion as authorities diverted vehicles to a single lane, resulting in long delays during peak hours.

Municipal officials are yet to comment on the cause of the road collapse.
