Gujarat is witnessing a worrying surge in respiratory patients, with an average of nearly 340 new cases being reported daily. With winter setting in and pollution levels climbing to alarming heights, experts fear that the number of patients experiencing breathing difficulties may increase further in the coming weeks.

In a recent incident, a 32-year-old man had to be rushed to the hospital after experiencing sudden breathlessness during a wedding ceremony. Doctors note that such cases among young adults are unusual. However, the rising presence of smog in the air has led to a spike in respiratory distress, often requiring patients to be put on oxygen support to stabilise their condition.

Cities like Ahmedabad are reporting a higher footfall of patients in OPDs suffering from respiratory infections and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). According to medical experts, continuous changes in weather patterns are further aggravating respiratory ailments.

Additionally, factors such as bird droppings, prolonged exposure to traffic-heavy roads, and poor air quality are contributing significantly to the rise in cases. Most patients reporting symptoms are aged 40 and above.

Doctors emphasise that individuals suffering from respiratory issues must wear masks whenever they step outdoors. Elderly people and those with comorbid conditions are advised to take extra precautions, especially in crowded places. People experiencing cold or cough symptoms should also wear masks to prevent complications and transmission.

Medical experts further recommend that, following a doctor’s consultation, individuals at risk should get vaccinated against seasonal influenza as an added preventive measure.
