Rise in marital disputes: Gujarat sees over 62,000 family court cases in a year
With the divorce cases and marital issues cases rising in Gujarat, the number of cases in Family court have been constantly rising, there are more than 50,000 pending cases in family court.
Data reveals that 62,146 cases were registered in Gujarat’s family courts in just one year, averaging 171 new cases per day. Nationally, Gujarat ranks third after Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Kerala in the number of family-related legal disputes.
Currently, Gujarat has 108 operational family courts, and as of February 28, 2025, a staggering 53,077 cases remain pending.
In Ahmedabad alone, more than 10,000 divorce cases are currently pending in the family court.
Compared to 2023, family court cases in 2024 have doubled, rising from 27,194 cases in 2023 to 62,146 in 2024, signaling a concerning trend.
Family courts primarily handle cases related to marital disputes, child custody, alimony, and property conflicts. However, the majority of cases involve divorce and child custody battles.
Experts believe that minor disagreements between couples are increasingly escalating into major conflicts, eventually leading to divorce.
