Rickshaw drivers observe strike over CNG price hike in Surat

The sudden hike in CNG gas prices is impacting the transport services, as auto rickshaw drivers in the Dindoli area of Surat launched a strike early this morning today.
The drivers reportedly expressed their grief by saying that due to increase in CNG prices, they are no longer able to afford the old fare and that it has become difficult to run a household.
As per reports, with CNG, prices of oil and spare parts have also increased, adding to the financial burden.
The rickshaw drivers also pointed out that an auto-rickshaw can carry only three passengers, and with a minimum fare of ₹30, most of the earnings are spent on CNG expenses. As a result, rickshaw operators believe that increasing the minimum fare by ₹5 has become essential to sustain their livelihood.
Thousands of commuters on their way to work, school and college in Surat were left in a state of distress early in the morning as rickshaw drivers refused to pick up passengers.
