Police allege five rounds fired from licensed pistol during confrontation over disputed market land and stall agreements
A retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DYSP), his son and daughter were arrested after an alleged firing incident linked to a land dispute near Nehrunagar bus stand in Ahmedabad, police said on Wednesday.
According to police sources, retired DySP Ashoksinh Chauhan allegedly opened fire from his licensed pistol during a confrontation between two groups over possession and commercial use of an open plot in the Nehrunagar area.
Officials said nearly five rounds were allegedly fired during the altercation. No casualties or major injuries were reported in the incident.
The firing reportedly took place during a meeting convened to resolve an ongoing dispute concerning the possession and operation of makeshift stalls set up on the disputed land under the name 'Nehrunagar Patharna Bazaar'.
Police said the land had allegedly been rented out to another party following an understanding agreement with Hitesh Barbidia. Temporary stalls were subsequently erected at the site and allegedly sublet to other vendors.
Investigators said the dispute intensified after the complainant side allegedly demanded documentary proof regarding ownership and possession of the land from Chauhan. The opposing side reportedly claimed that valid ownership documents were not produced and demanded that the premises be vacated.
The complainant side also allegedly sought the return of deposits and expenses incurred for constructing the stalls.
Sources said the land is believed to have originally belonged to a person identified as Priya Mehta and was later allegedly sold to another individual. Police added that a parallel civil dispute over the property is also ongoing.
According to officials, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation had earlier issued notices regarding unauthorised stalls constructed on the plot without civic permission.
Police alleged that the situation escalated during a settlement meeting on Wednesday, following which Chauhan allegedly fired from his weapon in the open area near the bus stand.
An FIR has been registered at Satellite Police Station in connection with the incident.
Police have arrested Ashoksinh Chauhan, his son Siddharaj Chauhan and his daughter, while another accused has also reportedly been detained for questioning.
Officials said Chauhan had earlier served as a DySP at the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) in Bhuj’s Palara Jail before retirement.
Police further stated that legal proceedings would also be initiated concerning the involvement of a minor allegedly linked to the incident.
The licensed pistol allegedly used in the firing has also been seized.
