Tension gripped Ahmedabad’s Nehrunagar area on Wednesday after a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) allegedly opened fire in the air during a dispute over land, police said.

According to preliminary information, the firing incident took place following an altercation between members of two groups over an ongoing land-related dispute. Police said around five to six persons from both sides were involved in a heated confrontation before the firing occurred.

Officials said retired DySP Ashwin Chauhan allegedly fired five rounds into the air during the altercation. Fortunately, no casualties or serious injuries were reported in the incident.

On receiving information about the firing, Satellite Police Station personnel rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Police said nearly ten persons from both sides were taken to the police station for questioning as part of the investigation.

Investigators have seized the pistol allegedly used in the firing and initiated further legal proceedings. Police officials said the firing appeared to be linked to a dispute concerning land ownership and possession.

Senior officers said statements of the involved parties were being recorded and CCTV footage from the area would also be examined as part of the probe.
