Repair roads, footpaths within 24 hours, orders AMC commissioner

Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani has ordered that broken roads and footpaths in the city must be repaired within 24 hours. 

The commissioner has emphasised that regular maintenance is necessary so that the road surface lasts longer, and so that footpaths are safe for pedestrians. With periodic inspections, broken roads or footpaths can be repaired at a lower cost. In addition, repairs of central verges and road furniture placed on different roads have been ordered to make the city’s roads stronger and safer.

The Road and Buildings Department has also been instructed to inspect roads that are 24 metres wide or more every three months, and to repair bumps and stop lines every six months.

The city has BRTS, Model Road Phase-I, Iconic Road, C G Road, as well as other roads 24 metres wide or more, and wall-to-wall roads 18 metres wide in different areas. 

Notably, despite AMC having opened left turns at various city roads many drivers can still be seen stopping their vehicles at the left turn even when they actually need to go straight or turn right.

It has also been observed that during road resurfacing work, municipal officials are rarely present at the site.

A road-map of maintenance 

According to the orders of AMC commissioner,

• Thermoplastic paint, stop lines, zebra crossings, and curbs should be inspected every 3 months with annual repairs 
• Cat-eyes and traffic signboards: inspection every 3 months; broken cat-eyes to be replaced immediately
• Broken signboards to be replaced promptly
• Curbs and footpath enamel paint: inspection every 3 months
• If necessary, stop lines, bumps, and zebra crossings to be repainted every month
