The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to introduce a QR code-based feedback mechanism for food and beverage outlets, beginning with panipuri vendors, under which customers will be able to report on food quality and hygiene standards.

Officials said the initiative is aimed at improving food safety and controlling water-borne diseases in the city.

AMC Health Officer Dr Tejas Shah said QR codes would be generated for panipuri carts across Ahmedabad, enabling customers to submit feedback on the quality of food and water served.

According to the civic body, over 1,500 panipuri vendors operate in the city. As part of a recent drive, around 1,600 samples, including water, flour, gram flour and other ingredients, were collected from vendors for laboratory testing.

The municipal corporation plans to develop dedicated software linked to the QR codes through which customers can share their experiences and observations regarding hygiene and food quality.

Officials said the system would later be expanded to cover all food and beverage establishments across the city.

The move, however, has drawn criticism from some residents, who argued that the responsibility for monitoring food safety should primarily rest with the civic administration and its health department rather than consumers.
