Registration charges to increase, AMC to implement new pet policy
Regular quarterly medical checkups for the pets and ensuring that pets are properly vaccinated

In the wake of a tragic dog attack in Ahmedabad’s Hathijan that claimed the life of a young girl, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is preparing to roll out a stringent new policy for pet dog ownership in the city.
Currently, dog owners are required to pay a registration fee of ₹200 per dog. However, this fee is expected to rise under the upcoming policy. In addition, dog owners will now be mandated to conduct regular medical checkups for their pets every three months and ensure that dogs are properly vaccinated.
The new policy will also set guidelines for the minimum space that must be allotted to pet dogs, a move aimed at improving the quality of life for the animals and ensuring public safety. Detailed norms regarding the required space and living conditions will be issued by the AMC.
The push for a policy overhaul comes after a Rottweiler in Hathijan fatally attacked a 4-month-old infant. The dog, which has since been captured, was found to become aggressive upon seeing a stick, according to behaviour and medical assessments conducted by AMC officials.
Naresh Rajput, head of the Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD) Department of AMC, stated that the dog’s owner had neither adequate knowledge of dog behaviour nor had they ensured proper medical care for the animal.
As a preventive measure, AMC will soon organise a free webinar for pet dog owners. Experts will offer essential training and insights on canine behaviour, aiming to educate and equip owners with the necessary skills to manage their pets responsibly.
“The new policy will ensure that every dog owner has essential knowledge of dog behavior,” said Rajput. “We’re committed to creating a safer environment for both residents and animals.”
Once the new policy is approved by the AMC’s Standing Committee, it will be officially implemented across the city.
As of January 1, 2025, pet dog registration has been made mandatory in Ahmedabad. According to AMC data, while the estimated number of pet dogs in the city exceeds 50,000, only 12,083 dogs have been registered so far by 10,702 owners.
