Red alert issued across Gujarat, downpour to continue till Aug 31

Gujarat is experiencing severe weather, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall persisting for several days. The Meteorological Department forecasts that the intense rainfall will continue until Aug 31.

Saurashtra, north, central, and south Gujarat have experienced torrential rains. Meanwhile, today, a red alert has been issued for a total of 13 districts, including Ahmedabad.

Red alert

Extremely heavy to exceptionally heavy rainfall likely in the central parts of Gujarat and northern districts of Saurashtra region.

Heavy to very heavy rains at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls likely in the district:

Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Patan, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Aravalli, Kheda, Ahmedabad, Anand, Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar, Vadodara, Chhotaudepur, Dang ,Tapi Surat, Narmada, Bharuch, Navsari, Valsad and in Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Morbi, Surendranagar, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Dwarka, Botad, Porbandar, Gir-Somnath, Diu and Kutch.

Weather forecast on August 28

With a red alert already in place for most districts, the Met Department forecasts continuing heavy rainfall. On Aug 28, a red alert will remain in effect for Kutch, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Devbhumi Dwarka, Junagadh, and Porbandar in Saurashtra.

Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for Morbi, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Kheda, Anand, Vadodara, Chhotaudepur, Bharuch, Narmada, Tapi, Surat, Navsari, Dang, and Valsad.

A yellow alert is in effect for Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Patan, Gandhinagar, Mehsana, Ahmedabad, Surendranagar, Botad, Aravalli, Mahisagar, Panchmahal, Dahod, and Gir Somnath.

Rainfall till Aug 31

The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall until Aug 31. On Aug 29, areas in Saurashtra and south Gujarat will see continued heavy rainfall.

An orange alert is issued for Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Porbandar, and south Gujarat’s Surat, Dang, Navsari, Tapi, and Valsad. 

A yellow alert is issued for Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Patan, Gandhinagar, Mehsana, Ahmedabad, Surendranagar, Botad, Aravalli, Mahisagar, Panchmahal, Dahod, and Gir Somnath.

On Aug 30, an orange alert will be in place for Kutch and Devbhumi Dwarka, while a yellow alert will cover Surendranagar, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Porbandar, Gir Somnath, Surat, Tapi, Dang, Navsari, and Valsad.

On Aug 31, a yellow alert is issued for scattered locations in Kutch, Navsari, and Valsad, with no warning for the remaining 30 districts.

Heavy rain-hit Ahmedabad

As the city prepared for Krishna Janmotstav, areas of Ahmedabad witnessed waterlogging, and disruptions.

The heavy rainfall of August 27 posed risks for commuters of western side of the city in Sarkhej, Makarba, Prahlad Nagar, Shyamal, and Naranpura.

In Ahmedabad, rain began with strong winds, leading to heavy downpours throughout the day. Several underbridges were submerged, disrupting traffic. The Mithakhali, Parimal, and Akhbar Nagar underpasses were closed, and a private bus was trapped in the Parimal underpass, endangering the lives of 28 passengers.

In Ahmedabad, there was 9.5 inches of rainfall in the last 24 hours. Naroda-Maniknagar received the highest amount of 13 inches of rain. Usmanpura experienced 11 inches of rain. The Vasna barrage reached a water level of 128.5 feet, leading to the opening of 9 gates. 

In the last 24 hours, 251 talukas across the state have received rainfall.
