Recruitment chaos: GPSC’s failure to heed calendar leaves candidates in the lurch
The writer Douglas Adams famously said, “I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.” Apparently, so does the Gujarat Public Service Commission.
According to a recruitment calendar that the body released earlier, the GPSC was meant to have held 62 competitive examinations in 2023, to recruit personnel to 82 cadres. However, these proved to have been mere suggestions.
Despite publishing recruitment calendars for years, GPSC has consistently deviated from announced dates for recruitment announcements, preliminary tests, main exams, interviews, and result declarations.
Several GPSC recruitment processes are experiencing significant delays:
Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF) Mains results pending after one year
Deputy Section Officer (DySO) Prelims completed 8 months ago, with no Main Exam dates announced
Class 1-2 (Advertisement No. 30) case pending in High Court
Advertisement No. 20/2022-23 Mains held 13 months after Prelims, with final results still unreleased
Advertisement No. 47/2023 facing a new High Court petition, with no update on what is coming next, or when
Tribal Development Officer (TDO) exam status unknown
Announcements regarding the new calendar announcements have been delayed, meaning it will likely be postponed as well.
In addition to causing mental anguish, these delays and uncertainties waste candidates' valuable time and often result in legal battles, incurring additional costs. As the organization responsible for selecting Gujarat government Class 1 and 2 officers, GPSC’s lack of responsiveness to candidates' concerns is troubling.
Many candidates are forced to seek legal recourse for answer corrections, with most errors acknowledged only after court intervention. This process further increases the burden on candidates in terms of time and financial costs.
