Rajkot-based YouTuber booked for spreading misinformation about Amul milk

The Chandkheda police in Ahmedabad have registered a complaint against Rajkot-based YouTuber Dr Hitesh Jani for allegedly spreading false and misleading information about Amul milk and other dairy products through a YouTube video, purportedly with the intention of tarnishing the image of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF) and its flagship brand Amul.
As per the complaint filed by Akash Vijaykumar Purohit (39), assistant manager (quality assurance) at the Amul Dairy unit of GCMMF in Bhat, Gandhinagar, the accused uploaded a video on his YouTube channel in which he made a series of false claims about the processing and quality of Amul milk.
In his statement, Purohit said he came across the video titled “Do you know how milk comes to your home?” while on duty on November 3, around 1.30 pm. The video, which has since gone viral on social media platforms including YouTube and Facebook, allegedly contained “false and baseless claims” such as:
Amul milk contains 22 types of chemicals.
Banned pesticides like DDT are added during processing.
Preservatives like sodium benzoate and emulsifiers are routinely mixed before packaging.
The milk sold is seven days old.
Milk pouches marked as 500 ml contain only 480–490 ml; and
Amul profits by deceiving consumers despite ISI and FSSAI certifications.
The complaint further states that Dr Jani, while claiming to “expose a foreign-controlled system”, accused Amul of being part of a larger conspiracy involving external influence over India’s dairy sector.
Purohit alleged that these unfounded remarks have “created fear and mistrust among consumers” and have the potential to “damage the reputation of Amul and the credibility of India’s cooperative movement”.
He added that, as a doctor, Dr Jani’s statements carried an undue weight that could mislead the public and harm the cooperative sector’s standing.
The Chandkheda police have initiated an inquiry into the matter, examining the video’s content and reach. Officials said legal action would be taken under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Information Technology Act for defamation and spreading misinformation.
Police said efforts are on to verify the allegations and trace the origins of the viral video.
