Railway police staff shortage at Ahmedabad’s Kalupur station

Updated: Feb 20th, 2024

Ahmedabad’s Kalupur railway station sees a hefty influx of 2 lakh daily passengers. This ranks the station among the country’s busiest ones. To maintain safety and security in such massive crowds, railway police staff are deployed.

However, against such massive passenger traffic, Kalupur station’s railway police have a strength of a mere 200 personnel. Which translates to a police officer for every 1,000 people.

This shortage, addressed by the railway police chief himself, has denied the police of prevention of the crimes and has prolonged the investigation processes.

70%–80% of the theft and snatching incidents at the station take place from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. because of insufficient police staff deployed at night.

According to reports, several inter-state gangs are operating in the station premises and trains, stealing mobile phones, purses, and other belongings from the passengers in an organised nexus.

The number of mobile thefts from trains has also been escalating with the passing days.

To tackle this, the police have deployed their technical surveillance and human surveillance teams to curb and solve such crimes.

Over this, the police superintendent of Western Railways said, “The railway station is continuously under CCTV surveillance. Patrolling is also carried out by the staff. Several crimes have been solved because of these deployments. ₹4.20 cr worth of goods was returned to their original owners.”
