Publish candidate criminal records in Gujarati: EC to parties

Updated: Mar 30th, 2024

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered the parties to publish the details of the candidates in the Gujarati language after an appeal from Mahiti Adhikar Gujarat Pahel (MAGP).

The criminal history, wealth, and education details of each candidate contesting in general and assembly elections should be published in Gujarati, ordered the electoral body.

Citing a February 2022 order of the Supreme Court, MAGP cleared that the voters should have the necessary information about candidates, and the data should be published in newspapers, social media, and online.

The Election Commission has issued C-2 and C-7 forms for this. Although the Election Commission has given detailed guidelines, it has been observed that political parties are not taking the matter seriously.

Some candidates’ criminal history was not published, the organisation said. The details published of some candidates were in English, or only printed once or twice.

The Supreme Court had asked the information to be published thrice.

Now, the state Chief Electoral Officer’s office has asked all parties to publish criminal history details in Gujarati.
