Public raid alleged illegal liquor den in Ahmedabad’s Shahpur

Tensions flared in the Shahpur locality of Ahmedabad after residents took matters into their own hands, raiding a suspected liquor den and driving out those allegedly consuming alcohol, according to viral footage circulating online.
According to witnesses, a group of residents stormed the premises, assaulted several men said to be intoxicated and forced them to leave the area. Some individuals were reportedly taken away in autorickshaws.
A video of the incident went viral on social media, triggering widespread discussion and raising questions about the enforcement of the state’s liquor ban.
Residents alleged that the liquor outlet had been operating openly for a prolonged period despite repeated representations to the authorities. They claimed that the presence of people consuming alcohol in the area had made it difficult for locals, particularly women and children, to use the road safely.
Frustrated by what they described as the police's inaction, residents said they felt compelled to intervene themselves.
The viral footage has drawn attention to the role of the local police. However, the police inspector of Shahpur Police Station denied any wrongdoing and said the clip was old, alleging that it was being circulated on social media to gain publicity misleadingly.
Police have not yet confirmed whether any formal complaints have been registered in connection with the incident.
