Private schools in Gujarat can charge admission, term fees, but there’s a limit!
Following multiple complaints of high term and admission fees charged by private schools in Gujarat, the state government clarified in the Vidhan Sabha that schools can charge the admission fee and term fee, each equivalent to one month of the annual tuition fees.
The question was raised in the Assembly, asking whether private schools can charge admission fees and term fees equal to one month of annual tuition fee as on December 31, 2024, or not. Responding to that, Gujarat Education Minister Kuber Dindor said that the schools can charge the amount.
Private schools can charge session fees (term fees) not exceeding one month’s tuition fee per session and admission fees not exceeding one month’s tuition fee, as per Section 2 of the Gujarat Self-Financed Schools (Regulation of Fees) Act, 2017.
The Gujarat High Court in 2024 had ruled in favour of the schools, noting that the Fee Regulatory Committee cannot prohibit schools from taking the admission and term fees, and these fees do not violate violate the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.
Following that, no official circular was issued by the government regarding the term fee and admission fee of the private schools, leading to questions in the Assembly.
