A policeman lost his life and two sustained severe injuries while chasing a bootlegger’s car in the Kanbha locality of Ahmedabad’s Daskroi.
On the night of Jan 23, assistant sub-inspector Baldev Ninama and staff, present in the police control room (PCR) van at the Kanbha check post, got a tip-off that a car of bootleggers with liquor was heading to Ahmedabad from Kheda.
The police positioned their PCR van on the road to catch the bootleggers in the car, but instead of stopping their car, the bootleggers rammed their speeding car onto the PCR van, resulting in the accident.
The PCR van flipped, and ASI Ninama and other policemen got severely injured.
The bootleggers abandoned their car and fled the scene. Other police staff reached the spot and rushed the injured policemen to the Civil Hospital.
ASI Ninama succumbed to injuries, and another policemen is under treatment.
Megha Tevar, in-charge superintendent of police, Ahmedabad (rural), said, “The Kanbha police station has booked the bootleggers under Section 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and efforts are underway to arrest the accused.”
“The police have seized liquor bottles from the abandoned car of the accused,” added Tevar.
ASI BM Ninama was originally from Sabarkantha’s Vijaynagar.
