Ahmedabad Police have secured two days’ remand of 20-year-old Rohan Pareshbhai Soni, accused of reckless driving that led to the death of two youths in a high-speed hit-and-run near the Rani of Jhansi BRTS near Nehrunagar.

According to ‘N’ Division Traffic Police, Soni, a resident of Kankaria, Maninagar was initially being questioned in connection with minor traffic offences when he admitted that he and three friends were racing at high speed in separate cars. Police said he was aware that overtaking on the wrong side at such speeds could result in fatalities.

Investigators allege that Soni’s vehicle, travelling at nearly 100 kmph, overtook a luxury bus from the wrong side, causing a collision that claimed two lives.

He has been booked under Sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with Sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

On Tuesday, Soni was presented before a metropolitan magistrate, who remanded him in police custody until 1.30 am on August 14 for further investigation.

Police said inquiries are ongoing to determine the involvement of the other vehicles in the fatal race.
