Police constable booked 10 days after fatal hit-and-run in Ahmedabad
A middle-aged man succumbed to injuries following a hit-and-run accident allegedly caused by a police constable in the Shahibaug area of Ahmedabad. The incident took place on June 19 near Shilalekh crossroads, while the victim died during treatment on June 21. The accused constable was arrested from his residence on July 1 by the L Division traffic police — 10 days after the tragic incident.
The deceased, Devendra Sinh Sankhwar, who lived near Subhash Bridge, worked as a delivery agent for agarbatti (incense sticks). On the day of the incident, Devendra was returning home from the Commissioner’s office when a speeding car suddenly took a sharp left turn and rammed into his bike near the Shilalekh crossroads. He was flung onto the road and sustained critical injuries.
The driver — later identified as Constable Digvijaysinh — fled the spot immediately without stopping to assist or even check on the injured man. According to officials, the constable panicked as a crowd began to gather at the site of the accident. He did not alert the police control room or emergency services, leaving the victim without timely aid.
Devendra was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries two days later, on June 21. The L Division traffic police registered a case and began an investigation. CCTV footage from the area helped trace the vehicle to Digvijaysinh, who was then serving at the police control room and had recently been transferred to Gaekwad Haveli police station. He was reportedly off duty at the time of the accident.
Despite efforts, it took police 10 days to track him down. He was eventually arrested from his home on July 1. Authorities confirmed that he has been taken into custody and further investigation is underway.
The incident has sparked public concern over the conduct and accountability of police personnel, particularly in cases of negligence and dereliction of duty.
