Today, the nation celebrates ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’, also known as ‘Tribal Pride Day’, to honour the birth anniversary of tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda. Chief minister Bhupendra Patel flagged off the ‘Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra’ at Ambaji temple today. He also addressed a public gathering  at a venue near Chikhla.

Meanwhile, prime minister Narendra Modi will launch IEC (information, education, and communication) vans at Khunti, Jharkhand, marking the launch of the ‘Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra’.

What is the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra?

The nationwide Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra will start in districts with a significant tribal population on Jan 25, 2024, and will cover all districts across the country.

Additionally, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, PM will also launch the first of its kind initiative, the ‘Pradhan Mantri Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PM PVTG) Development Mission’. There are 75 PVTGs in 18 states and UTs living in 22,544 villages (220 districts) with a population of around 28 lakhs.

A mission with a budget of about ₹24,000 cr is planned for the remote tribes inhabited in the forests to saturate PVTG families and habitations with basic facilities such as road and telecom connectivity, electricity, safe housing, clean drinking water and sanitation, improved access to education, health and nutrition, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Why is Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas celebrated?

Lost beneath the archaic episodes of history, there is a revolutionary who played a pivotal role in challenging British Christian missionaries and revolting against the conversion activities.

Munda, a folk hero belonging to the Munda tribe, was a significant Indian tribal independence activist.

Every year, Nov 15 is celebrated as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas to commemorate the birth anniversary of the tribal leader.

Earlier today, the prime minister visited the birthplace of Birsa Munda, where he paid floral tribute at the statue of Birsa Munda, often referred to as Bhagwan Birsa Munda by devotees,  in Ulihatu village in Jharkhand.
