Pigeons killed, accident risks rise in Surat over roadside feeding

Several pigeons are being killed, and the risk of road accidents is rising in parts of Surat due to the practice of feeding birds on busy roads, residents have alleged, blaming civic inaction and unsafe practices.
Locals allege people continue to scatter grains and place water troughs on roads, attracting pigeons into traffic and leading to frequent collisions with vehicles.
They added that such practices are also creating obstructions for motorists, increasing the likelihood of accidents, particularly in high-traffic areas.
Residents further alleged that leftover food and stagnant water at these feeding spots are causing unhygienic conditions and foul odour, posing a threat to public health.
One such case has been reported from the Saitirdha junction in Palanpur village, where bird-feeding activity has continued despite earlier action by the municipal authorities to remove similar encroachments.
According to locals, pigeons are regularly being hit by vehicles at the busy junction, while makeshift feeding arrangements on the road are adding to traffic hazards.
Despite repeated complaints, residents claimed that the civic body has not taken adequate action to curb the practice.
They have demanded strict measures to prevent roadside feeding, remove obstructions and ensure better sanitation and road safety in the affected areas.
