Days after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided 13 call centres in Ahmedabad involved in cyber-enabled crimes, the Prevention of Crime Branch (PCB) arrested two for running a con call centre in Thaltej on Nov 23.

Acting on a tip, PCB police inspector MC Chaudhary raided ‘Aadi Info Service’ in the premises of the Claywalls building in Thaltej.

Ujjwal Shah alias Steeve, a resident of Gopal Kunj Society in Maninagar, and Prashant Sharma, a resident of Sakar County in Shela, were apprehended at the call centre.

During the search, six other people were found to be working at the centre.

Modus Operandi

Having found many objectionable documents, PCB interrogated Sharma, which unfolded a story leading to a Pune-based man, Ehtisham Khan, owner of the Umar Marketing Solution Pvt Ltd call centre.

Khan used to provide data to Sharma based on which US citizens were allegedly cheated by promising  $50,000 as medical funds. The victims were later convinced to pay 10% to the perpetrators as the processing fees.

Around 20-25 people were defrauded every day, and Sharma used to get compensation of ₹50,000-₹70,000 per day, summing up to an annual income of ₹2 cr.

PCB recovered 10 computers and a laptop, an accounting book, a 14-page script orchestrated to defraud US citizens, and other documents.

The staff was trained to trap the US citizens and gain their trust.
