School dress code controvery in Ahmedabad

A controversy erupted on Thursday at Satyamev Jayate International School in Bopal after the school management prohibited girl students from wearing leggings under their skirts.

A large number of parents gathered at the school in the morning to protest the denial of entry to girls in uniform skirts with leggings underneath. Parents said they had previously raised the issue with the school via email, but no relaxation was granted.

Responding to the matter, Ahmedabad Rural District Education Officer (DEO) Bhagwan Prajapati stated that once the matter came to their notice, the Education Inspector was directed to seek clarification from the school principal.

According to the school, a specific dress code has been prescribed, which does not include leggings. “If exceptions are allowed, it could create irregularities,” the school reportedly said. However, the DEO said  that if parents demand changes, discussions may be held to revise the dress code from the next academic session.

The DEO noted that while the school’s clarification was given over the phone, an education inspector will visit the school in person tomorrow, and if necessary, a formal notice will be issued.

Meanwhile, parents have expressed anger over the compulsory skirt rule in the uniform policy, calling for flexibility to allow leggings.
