Gujarat police Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in a search operation busted an alleged spy from Tarapur in Anand, who was sending sensitive information to Pakistan on Oct 19.

Acting on a tip-off

According to several media reports, ATS kicked off the operation after receiving a tip-off from military intelligence (MI).

Labhshankar Maheshwari, a Pakistani intelligence operative (PIO),  was using technology to hack the phones of defence personnel through trojans and send various information to Pakistan. Maheshwari is reportedly a Pakistani Hindu who later got Indian citizenship.

Targeting defence personnel

The accused reportedly used a WhatsApp number to compromise the mobile phones of serving defence forces personnel, most of whom have children in various Army Public Schools (APS) across the country.

They were reportedly made to install certain malicious applications under the guise of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign.

He used to pose as an APS official and send malicious applications to his targets through texts, and he also encouraged the officials to upload their child’s photo with a national flag under the pretext of a so-called competition, as per reports.

Currently, the accused is in the custody of the ATS. An investigation is underway to ascertain the data and details of officials shared by the spy with Pakistan.
