In a span of just six days, the Ahmedabad Traffic Police issued a staggering 9,377 challans for wrong-side driving, collecting penalties amounting to over ₹1.59 crore. The data, compiled between July 17 and 22, 2025, underscores the city’s ongoing battle with traffic indiscipline and highlights the authorities’ intensified crackdown on violators.

The highest number of violations was recorded in S G Highway Zone-2 traffic police station, with 1,564 cases and a total fine amount of ₹27.76 lakh. It was followed by  B divison traffic police station  with 1,440 challans worth ₹23.47 lakh, and Zone M  with 1,067 cases and fines totalling ₹18.04 lakh.

The highest number of wrong side violations was reported on the stretch between Vaishnodevi to Pakwan crossroads which fall under SG-2 traffic police station, followed by Vadaj, Ranip area where second highest number of violates were fined by traffic police.

"During the drive we got known that 90% of the violators were auto drivers who were fined, while on the second place were the two wheeler drivers,” said senior traffic officials. 

In addition to monetary penalties, 133 vehicles were detained during this period. The highest vehicle detention was in E divison traffic police station (54 vehicles), followed by J division traffic police station (17 vehicles) and G division traffic police station (12 vehicles).

Moreover, 113 individuals were taken into custody for serious or repeat violations. The highest custodial actions were reported from M division of traffic police station (23 arrests)and K division of traffic police station (20 arrests).

N N Chaudhary Joint Commissioner of Traffic, stated that the campaign was part of a broader initiative to ensure road safety, especially along high-speed corridors and junctions prone to fatal crashes due to wrong-side driving.

"Wrong-side driving is not a minor offence—it is a lethal act of negligence. The campaign is meant to instil discipline and accountability among road users,” further said Chaudhary. 

The drive will continue in the coming weeks, with the police planning stricter surveillance using CCTV networks and joint enforcement teams across high-risk zones.
