Over 86,000 students admitted under RTE in Gujarat, 42% chose English medium

Gujarat saw its first admission of students after the government raised the income limit for school admission under the Right to Education (RTE) ACT-2009 to ₹6 lakh per annum for parents which was earlier capped at ₹1.20 lakh and ₹1.50 lakh for rural and urban areas, respectively.
A total of 86,274 students have been admitted in the 2025-26 curriculum in schools across the state with over 42% students opting for English medium.
A total of 9,741 schools have been included in the RTE this year. Around 93,860 (25%) seats were available across the schools, against which 2,38,916 online registrations had been received under RTE.
With the increase in income limit, around 44,000 more applications were received this year.
After thorough scrutiny, 13,761 applications were rejected, and 49,470 applications were found to be duplicates.
In the first round of admission, 86,274 students were admitted out of 1,75,684 applications received.
As many as 7,586 seats remained empty due to lack of choice of schools available.
As per the bifurcation of schools, 36,861 students were admitted to 3,553 English medium schools, 48,490 students to 5,725 Gujarati schools, 748 students to 408 Hindi schools, 117 students to 35 Marathi schools, and 18 students to 40 Urdu schools.
