Over 83% deaths in road accidents due to over-speeding in Gujarat

As many as 6,594 out of the total 7,854 road accidents related deaths in Gujarat were due to over-speeding, revealed the Accidental Deaths and Suicide in India 2023 report.

Compared to earlier years, Gujarat saw a rise of 3.6% in number of road accidents – 16,349 in 2023 compared to 15,777 in 2022.

A whopping 83.95% road accident deaths were reported due to over-speeding in the state. 12,653 out of total 15,383 injuries in 16,349 road related accidents were due to over-speeding in the state.

Apart from this 816 had died, 1,812 injured due to dangerous, careless driving or due to over-taking incidents in the state. 4,406 out of the total 7,854 that is almost 56% of incident of death in road accidents had occurred on Highways in Gujarat. 2,267 people have died in various road accidents on state highways, whereas 2,139 fatalities occurred on various national highways in the state. 55 people lost their lives due to road accidents on expressways.

According to the report, Ahmedabad alone accounted for 535 lost lives and 1,347 injuries in 1,767 road accidents. Followed by Surat, where 309 have died in 650 road accidents incidents, whereas 199 had lost their lives in 566 road accidents incidents in 2023. In Rajkot 178 have died in 494 road accidents in 2023.

The highest – 3,833 people have lost their life in two-wheeler related accidents in the state. Almost 1,025 people have died and 3,125 injured in road accidents were SUV, car, and jeep in such mishaps. 412 people died and 772 got injured due to truck, lorry, and mini-truck in the state. 519 fatalities had occurred due to auto-rickshaw and other three-wheelers in Gujarat in 2023.

Almost 21% of  road accidents – 1 in 5 – had occurred during evening peak hours between 6 pm to 9 pm in Gujarat. 2,719 road accidents have taken place between 3 pm to 6 pm in the state. This 6 hour time slot between 3 pm to 9 pm accounted for 38% road accident in the state.

The highest number of 1,572 accidents had taken place in the month of May in Gujarat in 2023, followed by 1,493 in January and 1,447 in March 2023.
