Kidney transplants overwhelmingly lead organ transplantation activity in Gujarat, accounting for more than 80% of all organ transplants performed in the state between 2020 and 2024, according to data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO).

Out of a total of 4,646 organ transplants conducted in Gujarat during the five-year period, 3,769 were kidney transplants. The remaining procedures included 749 liver transplants, 98 heart transplants, 19 lung transplants, and 11 pancreas transplants.

Additionally, Gujarat recorded 5,653 corneal transplants (keratoplasty) from 2020-21 to 2024-25. Corneal transplantation replaces a damaged or diseased cornea with a healthy donor cornea, restoring vision in cases where glasses or contact lenses are no longer effective.

Despite the high volume of transplants, demand far outstrips supply. As of December 8, 2025, Gujarat has 9,592 patients on the active waiting list for organ transplants — the second-highest in the country after Maharashtra (20,553 patients). Tragically, 85 patients in Gujarat died while awaiting organs between 2020 and 2024, as per data updated by transplant hospitals on the National Registry Portal.

Nationwide, 65,488 donors were registered from 2020 to 2024, comprising 61,417 living donors and 4,071 deceased donors. Delhi led the country with 15,750 organ transplants during the same period, followed by Tamil Nadu (10,098), Maharashtra (7,514), and Kerala (6,235).To boost organ donation, NOTTO has launched a dedicated web portal for pledging, recording over 4.5 lakh Aadhaar-verified pledges since September 17, 2023.

The organisation, along with regional and state transplant bodies, conducts regular awareness drives, including transplant games, poster and slogan competitions, and special pledge campaigns. A 24x7 toll-free helpline and active social media outreach on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube further support public education and coordination for organ donation.
