Over 60 fall ill after suspected food poisoning at religious event in Ahmedabad village

A major suspected food poisoning incident was reported from Rajpura village in Detroj taluka of Ahmedabad district, where over 60 people fell ill after consuming prasad during a religious gathering.
The incident occurred on the night of April 8, when sev-khamani was served as part of the prasad. Within a short time of consuming the food, several villagers began experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, and dizziness, triggering panic in the area.
Children and elderly were among those affected, with more than 60 people reporting illness. The affected individuals were rushed to Bhagyoday Hospital in Kadi and other nearby private hospitals, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Most of the patients are reported to be in stable condition.
Following the incident, teams from the Detroj health department and the food and drugs department reached the spot and initiated an investigation. Samples of the sev-khamani have been collected for laboratory testing to determine the cause of the contamination. Authorities are also examining the quality of drinking water used in the village.
The incident has sparked concern among residents, prompting local authorities to urge people to exercise caution regarding food consumption. Officials have advised that anyone experiencing symptoms of food poisoning should seek immediate medical attention.
This comes after 60 girls were hospitalised in Ahmedabad last week due to suspected food poisoning from eating at the hostel mess, and an ongoing investigation were two children lost their lives allegedly after eating suspected dosa batter in Chandkheda area.
